Uncompromised Clarity for Razor Sharp Focus

Oakley High Definition Optics® (HDO®) lenses optimize safety and performance to meet the uncompromising demands of professional athletes who settle for nothing less than the clearest, sharpest, most accurate vision. It offers truer, more accurate vision versus conventional lenses that magnify images and make objects appear shifted from their true position. With HDO, Oakley lenses meet or exceed the testing standards of the American National Standards Institute (the yardstick of performance for the eyewear industry).

The Clarity Test measures the sharpness of images viewed through the lens. The Refractive Power Test measures how inferior lenses distort vision by magnifying images, and the Prism Test measures how the lenses bend light and make objects appear shifted from their true position. These tests show how conventional lenses can compromise your vision.

Glare Protection with Uncompromised Clarity

A headache from glare can ruin your day. Golfers have to deal with the performance-killing distraction of glare from water hazards, bunkers and flat areas. Fishing sessions can be futile when blinding rays bounce off water and hide the keepers. Driving in glare can be risky, and road cyclists know how glare can hide potholes and other dangers. Any skier or snowboarder can tell you how glare distracts, diminishes mental focus and drains energy with tension. We developed HDPolarized lenses for elite athletes but our technology serves everyone. Because glare doesn’t care if you’re a sport champion, weekend warrior or just someone who enjoys the sun.

Polarized lenses filter out most glare, but not all polarized lenses are made equally. The best polarized lens is just that – one lens. Oakley HDPolarized Technology eliminates the need for glues and films that distort your vision.

Oakley Collection

TEAM OAKLEY

Our HDPolarized lenses are in a class by themselves. We use a precise infusion molding process to produce one comprehensive, single-layered lens. No glue, no sandwiching, no mustard or mayo. Just the clearest Polarized lens you can find.

VS

Oakley Collection

THE OTHER GUYS

This just in: it’s hard to see through glue. Any glue bonded material layer in a sunglass diminishes clarity and exaggerates distortion. This performance degradation makes it hard to tell whether you’re looking at the road or a really big piece of turkey jerky.

Oakley Collection

ON THE SAME PAGE

Both lenses in a single pair of Oakley sunglasses are manufactured at the same time to perfectly align and center the axis of polarization. Doing so prevents unwanted and distractive glare from sneaking through any part of the lens.

VS

Oakley Collection

BROKEN TEAM

Competitor lenses are manufactured at different times without precise alignment of the axis of polarization. These mismatched pairs result in compromised glare protection and clarity, putting you at greater risk of eye strain, headaches, and the rear bumper of an F250.

This Level of Testing is Absolutely Unnecessary

Oakley lenses are tested under extreme circumstances to guarantee uncompromising protection against high-mass and high-velocity impact that no other lens offers. We go beyond in precision, dedication and creativity to serve world-class athletes and progressive lifestyle consumers. Our products and technologies don’t just provide unmatched performance and quality, they completely redefine the category.

Part of the secret is Plutonite®, our durable and optically pure lens material. Within our spirit of performance and innovation, we continue to deliver the best performance products on the planet. Impact protection beyond what's necessary. We consider it mandatory.

LENS TINTS keyboard_arrow_right

Oakley Collection

Sunglasses Are Now Essential Equipment

Conventional lenses are all about blocking the sun, making you see less. Oakley lenses help you see more — more detail, more depth and more definition. We achieve it by optimizing lenses for specific environments, and that’s why sunglasses are no longer considered generic accessories. The Oakley Performance Lens Tints are another piece of essential equipment, a critical necessity for sport.

Oakley Collection BLACK IRIDIUM®

Ideal for bright sun, this HDPolarized® lens blocks 99% of reflected glare. The Iridium® lens coating balances light transmission to help you maintain color recognition, and the Plutonite® lens material inherently filters out 100% of all UV.

UV PROTECTION keyboard_arrow_right

Oakley Collection

You Can Be Blinded By What You Can’t See

An invisible form of radiation, UV rays pelt your retinas at 186,000 miles per second. Eye damage linked to UV includes cataract, photokeratitis and pterygium. UV damage builds up over time. You generally don’t feel UV rays, so there is no natural warning that damage is being done. And although clouds reduce the level of UV reaching your eyes, clouds don’t block UV completely — which means your eyes can be exposed to UV rays even on overcast days.

Thermonuclear Protection

Oakley Plutonite® lens material stops every wavelength of ultraviolet radiation from the sun‘s thermonuclear furnace, not just the lower energy form called “UVA.” Even our clear lenses filter out 100% of all UV. The image at the left shows how harmful rays are blocked while the visible spectrum passes through.

GOGGLE CARE keyboard_arrow_right

Oakley® goggles are the most sophisticated equipment made for water, dirt, snow and everything in between. They meet European Community directives for optical performance and are in full compliance with the I.P.D. of category 1 for EEC directive 89/686.

Oakley's H2O Goggle, MX Goggle, O Frame®, L Frame™, and E Frame® are engineered with scratch resistant Lexan® lenses. This provides 100% protection against UV and harmful blue light, and surpasses ANSI Z87.1 standards for impact resistance. Each frame is constructed with durable, lightweight urethane that braces the lens in the perfect arc of circle, hugging the face to maximize peripheral and downward vision.

Oakley Wisdom™ and A Frame® goggles feature dual-lens configurations with proprietary geometry that mimics the anatomical curvature of the eye. These performance optical systems maximize peripheral vision and minimize distortion at all angles of vision. Pure Plutonite® lenses block 100% of all UVA, UVB, UVC and harmful blue light while surpassing ANSI Z87.1 standards for optical clarity and impact resistance. Surge port technology provides fog-cutting air circulation that keeps drafts away from eyes.

How to keep the best at their best:

All new Oakley Goggles come with a bag for cleaning and storage. Using it will help maintain the unrivaled optics of Oakley lenses. Wash the bag regularly. (Note: Oakley does not warranty any lens against scratches.) Iridium® Lenses: Oakley Iridium® lens coating is engineered to block glare and heighten contrast. An array of available tints allows the wearer to tune transmission of any light condition. The 12-micron jacket of Iridium® must be treated with special care to avoid scratching. Use only mild soap and water; never use cleaning solutions.

IMPORTANT GOGGLE CARE: DO NOT RUB INNER LENS SURFACE WHEN WET.

If snow or water should collect inside the goggle, follow these steps:

  • Shake excess snow from the goggle interior. Clear all ventilation ports and lens vents.
  • Use the Microclear™ Bag that is included with your goggle to gently blot any remaining moisture.
  • Allow time for moisture to dissipate. Once the goggle is put back on, keep moving as much as possible. Airflow through the vents will help dry the goggle.

Your new goggle is designed for rugged durability, but precision instruments demand proper care.

Follow these guidelines to maximize performance and longevity:

  1. Avoid resting the goggle on your forehead or hat. This reduces the efficiency of ventilation ports and exposes the interior to moisture vapor from melting snow and perspiration. To minimize fogging, keep the goggle on your face.

For proper cleaning and storage, remember the following:

  • Do not use paper products, ski gloves or other abrasive materials to clean the goggle.
  • Allow the goggle to air dry before storing for extended periods.
  • Do not leave the goggle in areas of concentrated heat and sunlight, such as on a car dashboard or hanging from a rearview mirror.
  • Protect the lens and face foam by storing the goggle in its protective bag or case.

Oakley, Inc., based in Foothill Ranch, California, is a subsidiary of an Italian company Luxottica, that designs, develops and manufactures sports performance equipment and lifestyle pieces including sunglasses, sports visors, ski/snowboard goggles, watches, apparel, backpacks, shoes, optical frames, football visors, golf gear and other accessories.

Oakley is a major sponsor of top athletes from Golf, Baseball, Snow, Motocross and the Olympics. Most items are designed in house at their head office, but some countries hold exclusive designs relevant to their market. Oakley currently holds more than 600 patents for eyewear, materials, and performance gear

Today, they are a leading sports and lifestyle brand. Featuring not only eyewear but footwear, shoes, sandals, backpacks, training gear, athletic gear and casual wear.

Oakley was started by James Jannard in 1975 out of his garage with an initial investment of $300. The name "Oakley" came from Jim's English Setter, "Oakley Anne." Jannard began by selling what he called 'The Oakley Grip' out of the back of his car at motocross events. His motorcycle grips were unlike other grips available at the time, using a patented material known as 'Unobtainium'('Unobtanium'), a unique creation by Jannard.

The material is still used to make the earsocks on Oakley glasses, and many of the nose pieces and now the bands of their watches. Oakley went on to produce number plates, gloves, grips, elbow guards, chin guards, and goggles for the BMX and motocross communities.

In 1980, Jannard released a pair of goggles called the O-Frame. With the 'Oakley' logo present on the strap, the brand garnered increasing recognition and prominence throughout the sports industry. In 1983 Oakley began selling ski goggles.

The first Oakley sunglasses; Factory Pilot Eyeshades, were sport-oriented, resembling goggles and were released in 1984. These were followed in 1985 by the Oakley Frogskin, a casual sunglass style that was made in Japan.

The company went public in 1995, raising $230 million. In 2016 dollars, that would be approximately $360,000.00

In early 1996, Oakley had a pricing dispute with Italian company Luxottica, the world's largest eyewear manufacturers and retailers. Luxottica stopped carrying Oakley's products in their stores, including Sunglass Hut, and Oakley's stock market value declined 33%. Ironically, Luxottica today is Oakley's parent company. This dispute was later settled.

In 2001, Oakley bought Iacon, Inc., operator of mall-based sunglasses stores Sunglass Designs, Sporting Eyes, and Occhiali da Sole.

Oakley signed a four-year agreement to manufacture eyewear designed by themselves and Fox Racing in September 2004. Today, Fox manufacturer's their own sunglasses and goggles.

Starting in 2004, Jannard bought large quantities of Oakley stock: $2 million in 2004, $16 million in 2005, and $4.6 million in early 2006, bringing his personal stake in the company to 63%.

In 2006, Oakley acquired the Oliver Peoples group, a manufacturer of high-end fashion branded eyewear (under the Oliver Peoples, Mosley Tribes, and Paul Smith brands) for $55.7m, and Optical Shop of Aspen, a luxury eyewear retailer with fourteen stores.

On June 21, 2007, Luxottica announced a plan to purchase Oakley in a cash deal worth $2.1 billion, paying a 16% premium over the extant share price. The deal was completed on November 15, 2007, making Oakley part of a portfolio that includes brands such as Louis Vuitton, Ray-Ban, Persol, and Vogue.

During the preparations for the ultimately successful rescue of thirty three miners trapped for ten weeks in a Chilean mine in October 2010, a journalist covering the story contacted Oakley about donating sunglasses to the rescue effort, aware that the miners would need eye protection after having spent weeks in darkness. Oakley donated 35 pairs of its Radar sports glasses, fitted with specially selected tints.

Oakley was once the US Distributor for Arnette, Ray-Ban, and Revo.

Oakley sponsored members of the US Olympic Team in 2012.

In August 2013, Oakley sold its REVO brand to Sequential Brands for $20m.

In 2015, Oakley discontinued their Arnette line. Arnettte continues to be distributed by Luxottica in Europe and South America.

Today, Oakley is a leading sunglass and goggle manufacturer and sport brand.

Most of Oakley's technological designs, fashion pieces, gear, etc. were developed with extensive athlete input and testing in the field – including extreme conditions. Oakley also maintains US Standard Issue, which provides U.S. military and law enforcement eye protection. Oakley M Frame sunglasses are included as part of the U.S. Army's Authorized Protective Eyewear List (APEL), and have been assigned a NSN number for ordering through military supply channels. The company has also built at least one 'golf hovercraft', intended as an all terrain replacement for conventional golf carts, in partnership with the professional golfer, Bubba Watson.

Oakley has been affiliated with top sports athletes such as Michael Jordan.
