Inside Troy Lee Designs

What started in 1981 in his parents’ garage became a life-long business for a teenage moto racer – Troy Lee. Troy Lee was customizing his buddies’ helmets and from then continued to design for the world's fastest racers around the globe for more than 30 years. Coupling design and technology, Troy Lee Designs extended their operations to manufacturing a complete line of helmets, apparel and premium protection for off-road motorcycling and bicycling, sportswear and accessories.

For over 30 years, I have been customizing helmets for many of the world's fastest racers around the globe.

Troy Lee Designs has since expanded into a full force operation, offering a complete line of helmets, apparel and premium protection for off-road motorcycling and bicycling, sportswear and accessories, and operating the TLD / GoPro / KTM supercross and motocross team.

Research and Development

The conception of new and improved products happens through extensive research and development.

Troy Lee Designs (TLD) took their big leap by developing their D3 helmet and Supermoto race team. It may have been a simple trip to a sushi bar with his riding buddy, Scott Russel. Two other guys, Jeremy McGrath and Jeff Ward joined in their crazy idea and headed off to Perris Raceway with them. With a hardworking Marketing Team and record breaking racers, TLD Supermoto team was able to get some sponsors like Honda who gave them motorcycles.

Philosophy

Creating products that innovate and lead the market requires a different way of thinking.

Nobody understands a racer's needs and the demands of racing better than a racer himself. By creating the equipment fit for pro racers, TLD is able to bring innovation to anyone. They simply defy conventional and uses out-of-the-box thinking to focuses on design, workmanship, form, and function.

The end result is products that gives superior protection and can withstand the rigors of the track.

At Troy Lee Designs, we firmly believe in the power of design and technology.

Extensive research and development are vital to make products that innovate and lead the market. That is why TLD goes by the belief that basic science must exist to support a product's viability. And if the science is lacking, it must be discovered or invented. Product development is a continuous and ever changing process. TLD utilizes the latest and most comprehensive proven technologies so as to develop the products that stands out in the crowd and consistently improves over time.

Safety

Safety is at the forefront of developing protective equipment.

Troy Lee Designs has exclusively developed several new safety features into some of our helmets, starting with the D3.

Safety for riders is the utmost priority of TLD staff and researchers. They took impact management to a higher level when they introduced the D3 Action Sports Helmet. Of the several new safety featured they had developed, the Troy Lee Designs Dual Density Shock Pad System had been the most revolutionary by far.
